The actor will make his first appearance in the ninth episode of the ninth season of the hit television drama, while leading man William Petersen, who plays Gil Grissom, will only make guest appearances in future.Emmy and Tony award-winner Fishburne, 47, is to play a character - currently dubbed "the professor" - who crosses paths with Grisson in episodes nine and ten of the new season.
"[Gil] will definitely have an opinion on who this guy is," said executive producer Naren Shankar. "The idea is to see a lot of Billy [Petersen] and Laurence together."
Petersen is to remain on the show as an executive producer though Carol Mendelsohn - who holds the same title - was reluctant to reveal the manner of his character's exit, saying: "We're not going to tell you how he's leaving."
However, she explained that signing up Oscar-nominee Fishburne to appear was a longstanding goal for the production team.
"This has been months in the making," she told the Hollywood Reporter.
"We have been talking about the character we wanted to create and pursuing our dream casting, which is Laurence Fishburne."
Fishburne admitted that he had never actually seen the hit drama before agreeing to star as a former pathologist turned college lecturer.
"The episodes they sent to me were really engaging and wonderful and kind of dark and moody," he continued.
"It was like a lot of work that I had actually been involved in, so I thought, 'Wow, that's cool. This'll work.'"

After months of speculation, it is now official that Jesse L. Martin is leaving NBC's Law & Order after nine years on the show. Sources say his character, Detective Ed Green, will be written off.In the wake of Martin's departure, Anthony Anderson, star of Fox's freshman cop drama K-Ville, is in final talks to come on board as a new detective partnered with Jeremy Sisto's Cyrus Lupo.
Martin is expected to shoot one more episode with Anderson stepping in later this season. Although Fox has never officially pulled the plug on K-Ville, Anderson's casting in Law & Order pretty much makes that a done deal.
Martin recently finished work on the feature Peter and Vandy, and will next play Marvin Gaye in the indie biopic Sexual Healing, which also stars James Gandolfini.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the CW has green-lighted an untitled fashion-magazine reality series from Tyra Banks and Ken Mok, the duo behind the network's No. 1 show, "America's Next Top Model." The series has received an eight-episode order and will begin production in April for a launch in late spring or summer. The show, which the CW unofficially describes as "The Devil Wears Prada" meets "The Assistant," is eyed as a potential companion piece for "Top Model."
"It is a competition show about aspiring assistants looking to become assistant editors at a fashion magazine," Mok said. "At the same time they're trying to prove themselves as aspiring fashionistas, that they have a sense of style and savvyness, all the things to make it in the fashion world."
In each episode, the contestants will compete in two challenges, an individual competition and a team competition, in which each squad will submit a page for "The Book," a mock edition of the magazine. The losing team's page will end up in the trash, and one of its team members will be eliminated. The page from the other team will be included in "The Book." The winner of the competition will land a job in the fashion industry.
The producers are in negotiations with a real fashion magazine to host the contestants, and its editors will help judge the challenges.
